What is a doula?

To put it simply, a doula is a birthing support person. Birth is hard work. Having a doula at your birth allows both the birther and their partner to be fully present for the birth of their baby. Every birth can look so different. Doulas help the parents to know their options, calm anxieties, and empower through education. Start your parenting journey off on the right foot.

The Importance of Having a Doula

For most of humanity, births were a community event, and women would gather to support the laboring person. There were always people around that knew the birther on a personal level and had attended many births before. As birth technology has improved, and birth has largely moved to the hospital, we have lost this community feel. Often the people at births are either doctors and nurses youve never met before, and are unfamiliar with the birthing person, or are  partners, friends and parents who have not attended many births. Having a doula at your birth is the perfect intersection of someone who knows you and your values, and has been a birth attendant. Doulas see it all, so they can truly show up for you. Our job is to support you in whatever decisions you make, and are happiest when you feel you are able to make an informed and educated call in line with your values.

Personalized Care Every Step of the Way

Every birthing journey is unique, and doulas are dedicated to providing personalized care tailored to the individual needs and preferences of each family. Whether it’s a hospital birth, home birth, or birthing center, a doula’s presence can transform the experience, ensuring that families feel supported, and cared for.

  • Doulas are there to calm anxieties, and encourage the family. We know that birth can feel scary, but we do everything we can to show you that you've got this!

  • While coping with contractions, doulas are skilled in counter pressure to help you through them. If you have an epidural, the best way to move baby down is to keep moving the birthing parent. Doulas have to be strong in mind and body.

  • Because birth can look so different, doulas are here to walk you through all of the options. We offer evidence based information to help you make the decisions in line with your values.

  • What's most important is that you feel satisfied with your birth. Doulas help families to feel empowered to advocate for themselves, and are there to advocate the family's wishes to the medical team on their behalf.
